The jewelers magnifying glasses utilize convex lenses in order to produce enlarged images. Modern day magnifiers come in compact designs and typically held in close proximity to the eye as well as the object being viewed. Normally these devices can magnify objects up to 10 times, allowing the user to view the tiniest of details on objects.
This kind of products are made of glass or acrylic lenses which are encased in plastic or wooden frames. Depending on the design, the frames may come with a handle or the device may come attached to a loop headband. Jewelers magnification glasses created for bug viewing and watch repairers also come in specialized designs. Several hand held magnifiers also come with LED lights to provide illumination when viewing objects in minimal light conditions. A range of these devices come in stylish packages, as key ring attachments and integrated on pens.
Aside from the jewelry store, in medical centers and for household chores, the products are utilized in a number of other fields. Art dealers and geologists use the magnifiers to examine paintings and fossils respectively. Architects use magnifiers when creating model buildings, sewers use the devices when creating intricate stitches and the devices are also utilized in philatelic examinations.
The modern day this kind of products have their roots back to the 1250 A.D period. Roger Bacon is the great scientist accredited with inventing the magnifying glass as we know it. However, the devices can be traced back to the 5<sup>th</sup> century, when Aristophanes made a reference to ‘burning lenses’ in his play; The Clouds. There is also proof of the existence of these devices in the 11<sup>th</sup> century period, as described by Ibn al-Haytham; an Iraqi scientist in his “Book of Optics.”
The most common types of jewelers magnifying glasses are the loupes. They are at times referred to as jeweler’s loupes and they are quite similar to microscopes. Loupes come with smaller lenses, which achieve great magnifications and require close proximity to the object in order to achieve proper magnification.

Vintage Radiogram Coffee Table $1000 This radiogram coffee table is a piece with a history. It was originally purchased in 1958 by a mine engineer working in the Blackhill colliery in Rotherham in the North of England. I acquired the radiogram direct from its owner. He told me about many of the fond memories he and his family had of listening to this radiogram over the years, through turbulent times for the mining community. The radiogram had been an important part of their home and family life, but sadly it was now electronically beyond repair, and the body was in bad condition. Having recently moved in with his daughter, the gentleman was unable to take his radiogram with him, but could not bring himself to throw it out. His daughter managed to contact me via a friend, and I undertook the 300 mile round trip to collect it. The result is this wonderful piece of functional art, which will once again form a focal point of someone’s living room. The body of the radiogram has been refurbished and re-painted, finished with a sparkling red lacquer and a thick, strong glass top. Under the glass in the recess is a chromed Garrard turntable and record, creating a really eye-catching and individual piece. This is of course a unique piece, a hand produced one of a kind with an endearing story. The dimensions of the radiogram are H51cm x W100cm x D47cm.
